Ann Hutchinson Basic Info

1.  Hutchinson & her family arrived in Boston, following minister John Cotton from England
2.  Hutchinson begins to hold religious discussions in her home
3.  Hutchinson is tried and convicted of sedition, she is then sentenced to be banished
4.  She is also convicted in a church trial
5.  She and her family are henceforth banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  They travel to Rhode Island.
6.  She is killed in a Native American attack.

Why is this important?
It helped diminish the governmental powers of the Bay Colony's religious leaders.  Beginning in 1641, laws of the colony were no longer based on religious leaders interpretations of the Bible, but on the laws of England.  In 1644 the establishment of a 2-house legislature further eroded the power of religious leaders.  In 1646 laws that discriminated against unpopular religious views were annulled.

What was her crime?
She believed that a person's inner connection with God was more important than outer appearances in following Church laws, and that people could receive revelations without the help of a minister.
